DRIVING CONDITIONS NORTH OF SAULT STE. MARIE HAZARDOUS - HIGHWAY 17 NORTH CLOSED AT BATCHEWANA

(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) The Ontario Provincial Police would like to caution motorists that driving conditions North of Sault Ste. Marie have become extremely hazardous and Highway 17 has been closed from Batchewana to Wawa at this time.

Blowing and drifting snow along with freezing rain have made visibility and road conditions extremely slippery.

Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie detachment are currently investigating three motor vehicle collisions that have occurred in the past hour in this area.

If you have plans to travel North on Highway 17 you may want to wait for further updates or call the Ministry of Transportation Road Conditions at 1-800-268-4686.

Road Closure Advisory

The Ontario Provincial Police advise the public of the following road closure.

Location: Hwy 17 between Sault Ste Marie and Wawa

Detachment area: Sault Ste Marie and Wawa detachments

Time of road closure: 11:30 a.m. 01 April 2008

Reason for the closure: Weather and driving conditions

Detour: None

Estimated duration of closure: Until weather conditions improve.

Time road reopened: (will advise )

WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE A DRIVER’S LICENCE – DON’T DRIVE

(Havilland Township, ONT) On the 31st of March 2008 at around 2:00 pm an OPP officer conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 17 in Havilland Township stopped a northbound motorist and investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended driver’s license.

Further investigation revealed that the license plates on the vehicle were not registered to that vehicle and there were open beer bottles in the vehicle.

Stephen GLAZEBROOK, 50 years old, of 31 Havilland Shores Drive in Havilland Township was charged for Driving Under Suspension under the Highway Traffic Act.

MR. GLAZEBROOK was also charged with Unauthorized Use of Plates under the Highway Traffic Act and Having Open Liquor In a Vehicle contrary to the Liquor License Act of Ontario.

MAJOR DRUG BUSTS EXECUTED ALONG THE NORTH SHORE

(Blind River, Ont.) On the 28th of March 2008 the OPP Joint Forces Drug Unit which consists of members from the OPP Drug Enforcement Section Sault Ste Marie, OPP North East Region, Sault Ste Marie Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police conducted a vehicle stop on Highway 17 just West of Blind River which resulted in a substantial seizure of Cocaine, 314 grams, with a street value of $31,400.00, cash in the amount of $1760.00 and the seizure of a 1999 Dodge
Pickup truck valued at $10,000.00.

CHARGED with the following is Michel Joseph FORTIN (46) of Blind River.

(1) Possession COCAINE for purpose of Trafficking 5(2) CDSA.
(2) Possession of COCAINE 4(1) CDSA
(3) BREACH PROBATION 733.1 CCC.

FORTIN has been remanded in custody to await his first Court Appearance on April 3rd, 2008.

Drug Search Warrant Executed

(Blind River, Ont.) In the early morning hours of the 29th of March 2008 OPP Joint Forces Drug Unit which consists of members from the OPP Drug Enforcement Section Sault Ste Marie, OPP North East Region, Sault Ste Marie Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police executed a Drug Search Warrant at a residence just West of Blind River.

As a result of the search police seized the following:

32 grams Cocaine with a Street valued of $3,200.00
361 grams marihuana with a Street Value of $7,200.00
2 grams of Psilocybin (magic mushroom) value $40.00
and cash in the amount of $42,867.00.

Charged with the following is Dany BOUILLON (41) and Donna MAY (44) both of Blind River.

(1) Trafficking in COCAINE 5(1) CDSA
(2) Poss. COCAINE for Trafficking 5(2) CDSA
(3) Poss. MARIHUANA for Trafficking 5(2) CDSA
(4) Poss. MARIHUANA 4(1) CDSA
(5) Poss. Psilocybin (magic mushroom) 4(1) CDSA.

BOUILLON is scheduled to appear in court on May 1st, 2008 and MAY is scheduled to appear in Blind River Court on April 10th, 2008.
