Traffic stop leads to firearms charges for Sault driver

On March 6, 2019 at approximately 3:20 p.m., members from the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police and the Batchewana Police Service observed a known male driver, who was a suspended driver, operating a motor vehicle on Frontenac Street, Batchewana First Nation, Ont.

The officers conducted a traffic stop and as a result of further investigation, Jason Gilbert, 35 years-old of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. was charged with the following:

  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Possession of a firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered with contrary to Section 108(1)(b) of the CC,
  • Careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition contrary to Section 86(1) of the CC,
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm contrary to Section 94 of the CC,
  • Three counts of driving while under suspension contrary to Section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The accused is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing on March 7, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice located at 426 Queen St., Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
