Toronto driver charged after ditching vehicle in Bruce Mines

BRUCE MINES - On April 10, 2020 shortly after 4 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 where a westbound vehicle was driving erratically and all over the road west of the Town of Thessalon.

The vehicle continued through the town of Bruce Mines where it entered the northbound ditch near the junction of Highway 17 and Garden Bay Road. The driver exited the vehicle and left the scene on foot and was located a short time later by police.

A query revealed the driver was in breach of several conditions and wasn't licensed.

As a result of the investigation, Makoons Meawasige, 23 years of age from Toronto was charged with:
    •    Fail to comply with recognizance (six counts), contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    Drive no licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and
    •    Careless driving, contrary to section 130(1) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on July 2, 2020.
