OPP COMMITTED TO HAVING A SUSTAINED PRESENCE ON OUR ROADS THIS LABOUR DAY WEEKEND
(East Algoma) – This upcoming Labour Day weekend officers of the East Algoma OPP will be out patrolling our roads and highways. “A moments inattention can result in injury and death” sates Inspector Mark Andrews – Traffic and Marine Commander, North East Region. “Drivers are drifting across the centre line for whatever reason, possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into oncoming traffic. Drivers seem to let down their guard in sunny weather and are less alert to what’s going on around them.”
Speeding, following too closely, improper lane changes, improper passing, disobeying traffic control and failing to yield the right of way are factors significantly in terms of the collisions investigated by the OPP. Officers are urging motorists to consider their driving habits and commit to changing behaviours that put themselves and their family’s lives at risk. Texting and use of cell phones is prohibited while driving. 49% of adults say they have been passengers in a car when the driver was sending or reading text messages on their cell phone. Overall, 44% of adults say they have been passengers of drivers who used the cell phone in a way that put themselves or others in danger.
Inspector Percy Jollymore – Detachment Commander of the East Algoma OPP would like to remind motorists using the highways, that controlling your vehicle is your number one priority. It only takes a split second for your vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic or onto the shoulder, a split second that could change your life forever. Our goal is to do our best to ensure that everyone on our roads makes it safely to their destination.
