MANITOULIN OPP INVESTIGATE TWO VEHICLE FATALITY COLLISION

(Howland Twp.) – On Wednesday 26 November 2008 at 9:45 pm Manitoulin OPP responded to a two vehicle collision on Hwy 6 about 6 kilometres south of Little Current in which one person tragically lost their life. The deceased has been identified as Nina Jacko age 35 of Whitefish River First Nation.

A southbound 2002 Nissan crossed the centre line and struck a northbound 2003 Ford Wind star Van. Officers had Hwy 6 closed for a few hours while the collision was investigated by officers of the Manitoulin O.P.P. with the assistance of the OPP Northeast Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigator to do a reconstruction of the scene. The NEMI Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

The collision is still under investigation at this time. The other driver was taken to the Manitoulin Health Centre for minor injuries and later released. At the time of the collision the highway was ice covered, and light snow had begun to fall. The collision is still under investigation at this time.

OPP RIDE Checks

As part of ongoing anti drinking and driving initiatives Sault Ste Marie OPP Detachment and Highway Safety Division officers conducted RIDE in 4 different locations Wednesday afternoon. 207 vehicles were checked resulting in 2 12 hours suspensions , 4 Highway Traffic Act Charges and 1 Roadside test for a driver who had been drinking. Officers conducted a traffic stop at 1:00 a.m on Thursday morning at the corner of Second line and Old Garden river road and found the driver had been drinking. The driver Darrell Boyko age 40 of 1 Idahoe St in Sault Ste Marie has been charged with Operation of a motor vehicle with over 80 mg% of alcohol contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

The OPP Festive RIDE program begins on Friday and runs through January 2nd. The motoring public can expect to see officers conducting RIDE all over the province in an effort to curb drinking and driving related motor vehicle crashes. Be safe and use a Designated Driver or take a cab.

Drug Seizure

On Wednesday the 26th of November 2008, members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police and members of the OPP Drug Enforcement Section, Sudbury executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Warrant to Search at a residence on Kaboni Road in Wikwemikong, Ontario.

As a result of the search of the residence police seized a quantity of cannabis marihuana and offence related property, worth an estimated street value of over $2500.00

42 year old Robert Henry WEMIGWANS of Wikwemikong has been charged with:

• Possession for the Purpose of trafficking in a Controlled Substance, section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

And will be appearing in Ontario Court of Justice – Bail court Division on Friday 28th of November 2008 at 1:00 pm in Gore Bay, Ontario.

This investigation is part of an on-going initiative by members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service and the OPP Drug Enforcement Section, Sudbury to address the increase in crime and drug related activity.
