MOTORISTS MUST YEILD TO HORSES

(Blind River, ON.) – Living in the north it is not unusual to see deer, moose or smaller animal on the road while driving you car. I’m sure every driver would slow down in fear of hitting the animal and damaging their vehicle. Unfortunately the same can’t be said when someone meets a person riding a horse. Recently there was a horse and rider who were struck by a passing motorist near Collingwood. The rider suffered minor injuries but the horse had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.

East Algoma OPP want to remind motorists that when approaching a horse that is being led or ridden you must take every reasonable precaution to prevent the frightening of the horse and to ensure the safety and protection of any person driving, leading or riding upon the horse. Just as important when you are overtaking someone on a horse you must move to the left so far as may be necessary to avoid a collision. Frightening a horse or failing to move over carries a $150.00 fine and 3 demerit points under the Highway Traffic.
