O.P.P. and M.N.R.
O.P.P. and M.N.R. Combined Enforcement Project Obtains Results

(HORNEPAYNE) – Members of the Superior East OPP Detachment; Hornepayne Office) and the Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for the area conducted a two day project (June 12 & 13, 2009) directed at identifying concerns within the region. The officers accessed a local Fly-in-Only Lake in the Hornepayne area in an effort to ensure compliance with several Provincial Statutes during the first day of the project. This was followed by a R.I.D.E. stop set up on Highway 631 near Hornepayne the following day. Among the statutes that were enforced were the Ontario Fishery Regulations, Public Lands Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, The Small Vessel Regulations as well as the Liquor Licence Act and Highway Traffic Act.

Officers levied almost $2,200.00 in fines and issued ten Provincial Offence Notices, six offences under the Ontario Fishery Regulations for over limit and two charges under the Highway Traffic Act for seatbelt violations. One offence for Failing to Provide a Fishing Licence to a Conservation Officer and one offence for Non-Resident Camping on Crown Land without Permit was laid. Twenty-five fish were seized from anglers who were in possession of more than their legal limit. Officers also issued two warnings under the Highway Traffic Act and one under the Small Vessel Regulations. Officers checked thirty-six anglers while on lake patrol during the first day of the project as well as checking eighty-three other sportsmen and forty-six motor vehicles on the second day of the project at the Check Stop.

Officers were generally pleased with the compliance they found but noted that anglers need to be aware that there are specific catch and possession limits guidelines for various sport fish in Ontario. Being in possession, includes all fish in your possession, whether they are in the fridge, the freezer or on your stringer. The Limit is the Limit.

For more information on Fishing Regulations and Guidelines contact the M.N.R. Information Centre at 1-800-667-1940 or check out their website @ontario.ca/mnr.

Note – The fish seized were donated to a local food bank.
