IT HELPS TO KNOW YOUR WHO IS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Heyden, Ont.,

An officer with the Sault Ste Marie OPP proves it is helpful to know who lives where in your neighbourhood and your patrol area.

Yesterday at about 5:15 p.m. the officer was patrolling Birchgrove Road in Heyden. He saw two men working on a snow machine in the driveway of a home. The officer recognized one of the men as having an outstanding warrant of arrest for assault causing bodily harm.

The officer drove into the driveway and arrested the 27-year-old Heyden resident. It is alleged that in late 2003 the man assaulted a woman he was living with at the time and then fled the area. He will appear in Sault Ste Marie bail court today.

SAULT OPP BUSINESS PLAN PRODUCING RESULTS

Sault Ste Marie, Ont.,

The Sault Ste Marie OPP’s business plan for 2004 has set many goals for us to attain. Some of the goals are to conduct year round R.I.D.E. checks and to increase seat belt enforcement.

Yesterday saw two incidents that will help us reach our objectives. At about 1:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon an officer was on patrol of Trout Lake Road when he witnessed a vehicle lose control and slide sideways on the roadway. As the car slid past the officer, the officer noticed that the driver was not wearing his seatbelt. The 42-year-old driver from Espanola now has a seat belt ticket.

Our second objective proved to produce results last night as officers conducted R.I.D.E checks on Hwy 17 in Goulais River.

At about midnight last night officers were checking vehicles for impaired drivers when they discovered one man had been drinking. The roadside breath test indicated the man had been drinking and he was issued a 12-hour driver’s licence suspension. The 41-year-old resident of New Hamburg Ontario also had his vehicle towed from the scene.
