LOST PERSON LOCATED BY OPP MARINE UNIT (Spanish, ON.) – On August 5 2009 at 6:00 p.m. East Algoma OPP, Blind River detachment received a call of a lost person who had been boating near Spanish.
LOST PERSON LOCATED BY OPP MARINE UNIT

(Spanish, ON.) – On August 5 2009 at 6:00 p.m. East Algoma OPP, Blind River detachment received a call of a lost person who had been boating near Spanish. 54 year old David Smittinger of Wisconsin and his brothers were boating along the North Channel in the Spanish area. They were forced to anchor their catamaran near Shoepack Bay because of rough waters. Smittinger took advantage of the shore time and ventured off to take some photos of the area but ended up getting lost. OPP officers from the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Marine Unit and the Canine Unit were dispatched to the area. ERT and Canine began a ground search while the Marine Unit conducted a shoreline search. At 12:12 a.m. the Marine Unit successfully located Smittinger on the shore near Boomcamp Bay in good health. He was returned to his family.

ONE DROWNING VICTIM LOCATED

(HORNEPAYNE) – On August 5, 2009 at approximately 1 pm members of The OPP search team located one of the males who was deceased. Search operations are continuing for the second missing male. The two U.S. residents were staying at a lodge on KABINAKAGAMI LAKE and the rapids where the two men went missing are on the north end of that lake. Names are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin. Further information will follow as the investigation progresses.
