Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash Hwy #17 Garden River The Sault St Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred a 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning on Hwy#17, on the Garden River First Nation.

The Sault St Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred a 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning on Hwy#17, on the Garden River First Nation. A west bound car crossed the center line and was struck head on by a east bound unloaded tractor trailer unit. The driver of the car, a 71 year old lady died at the scene. The driver of the tractor trailer Douglas Hopkins age 58 of Sudbury was not injured. Charges are not anticipated. Identification of the victim will be made on Friday once extended family have been notified. Fatigue is being explored as a possible cause of this tragic crash.

Impaired ATV Operator Apprehended

A member of the Sault Ste Marie OPP Traffic and Marine Unit saw a ATV being operated on the side of Hwy#17 in Fenwick Township. The driver failed to stop for the police officer and was eventually cornered on Pickard Rd. The operator had been drinking and subsequently failed a breath test. Charged with Impaired Operation and Drive over .08, Flight from police and Drive while disqualified Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada is Robin Vincent Feifel age 22 of Robertson Lake Rd Goulais River. Mr. Feifel will appear in Criminal Court in Sault Ste Marie on the 10th of September.

Liquor Complaints on Harmony Beach

The OPP have received several complaints and have charged a number of people for possession of open liquor at Harmony Beach. Drinking or possession of open liquor in a public place is against the law and will result in a fine of $110.00. The beach is for family time and not a place for alcohol.

CAMP BREAK AND ENTER

(Spanish, Ontario) On Wednesday August 1, 2007 at approximately 7:00 am the East Algoma Blind River OPP received a complaint of a break and enter to a cottage located on Crab Lake, Spanish, Ontario.

The break and enter occurred on July 31, 2007 between 6:00 am – 8:00 pm.

Items stolen in the break and enter include; a Husqvarna Chainsaw, cash, a camera, medication and binoculars. The value of the stolen items are estimated at $800.00.

AREA BUSINESS BROKE INTO

(Desbarats, Ontario) On July 23rd and 24th, 2007 the East Algoma Thessalon OPP received reports of several break and enters in the Desbarats, Ontario area.

On Monday July 23, 2007 at approximately 7:30 am it was reported that over the weekend a break and enter occurred on Deplonty Road, Desbarats, Ontario at the Northern Quality Meats. Cash, meat and a computer tower were stolen.

On Tuesday July 24th at approximately 6:50 am it was reported that overnight a break and enter occurred on Highway 17 at Karhi Construction. A laptop computer and meat was taken in the break and enter.

On Tuesday July 24th at approximately 7:15 am it was reported that a second break and enter had occurred overnight at Northern Quality Meats located on Deplonty Road, Desbarats, Ontario. Meat was taken in this break and enter. A freezer door was also left open destroying approximately $5000 worth of meat.

SCHOOL WINDOW BROKEN

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Wednesday August 1, 2007 the East Algoma Elliot Lake OPP received a call regarding a window being broken at Villa Française des Jeunes Ecole on Edinburgh Road, Elliot Lake, Ontario.

WINDOWS SMASHED OUT IN TRUCK

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Tuesday July 31, 2007 the East Algoma Elliot Lake Detachment received an occurrence regarding windows being smashed out in a truck on Milliken Road, Elliot Lake, Ontario.

The damage was done between Monday July 30th at 11:00 pm – Tuesday July 31st at 10:00 am. The passenger side window and the rear window were both smashed.

BIKE STOLEN

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On Tuesday July 31, 2007 the East Algoma Elliot Lake OPP received a report of a stolen bicycle from an Axmith Avenue residence in Elliot Lake, Ontario.

The bicycle is described as a purple 20 speed “DINA VOID” mountain bike.
