DRUG ENFORCEMENT UNIT CHARGE 34 PEOPLE WITH 204 OFFENCES
(MANITOULIN ISLAND, ON.) The Ontario Provincial Police Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau – North, Drug Enforcement Unit, Manitoulin OPP, Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service and the United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service have charged 34 individuals with drug related offences following early morning arrests conducted in the communities of Little Current, Gore Bay and Wikwemikong and M’Cheeng First Nations Territory on Wednesday April 13th, 2011.

The charges stem from a year long undercover investigation conducted by the three Police Agencies.

The investigation, code named Project Swingbridge, focused on infiltrating drug traffickers operating in the communities located on Manitoulin Island. An undercover officer was successful in infiltrating local traffickers and making numerous drug purchases. The investigation concluded with the execution of seven search warrants.

Thirty four individuals have been charged with 204 drug related offences. Oxycodone, hydromorphine, fentanyl patches, morphine, clonazepam, percocets, diazepam, cocaine and marihuana was purchased and seized along with ten firearms. The street value of the drugs seized is $40,000.

The investigation is continuing.
