While little official word has come from the OPP in regards to their investigation on St. Joseph Island, rumours have been swirling about the suspicious death.

About 2,300 people live on St. Joseph Island, about 315 of whom reside in Jocelyn Township, where the body was found by East Algoma OPP on Jan. 6 along P Line.

Mark Henderson, reeve of Jocelyn Township, told SooToday there was a sense of shock among some community members when the death was announced.

"It was a shock to everybody. We don't expect this to happen," Henderson said by phone on Wednesday.

He said his thoughts are with the family of the deceased, who has not yet been identified. No official cause of death has been disclosed and the OPP has also not yet said if the deceased person is male or female.

"It's like my mom always said, that's somebody's son. That's somebody's daughter," Henderson said.

Although there is much discussion in the community about the death, he said he doesn't know any more about it than anyone else.

"I don't know anything more because they haven't disclosed anything to me either and I'm not going to repeat rumours or anything like that," he said.

"It's a horrible situation for everybody."

In a news release, the OPP said it arrived on scene at 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 6, responding to a report of a deceased person along P Line.

On Jan. 11, another OPP release asked for dashcam footage from anyone travelling in the area between 9 a.m. on Jan. 4 to 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 6.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the East Algoma OPP at 1-888-310-1122. If you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or visit ontariocrimestoppers.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
