The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 46-year-old man on Thursday in Elliot Lake.
Preliminary information suggests that at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 27, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a residence in the area of Westhill Road and Axmith Avenue for a Break & Enter and Assault call.
Once inside the residence, officers found a person of interest. A struggle ensued as officers attempted to handcuff the man.
He was eventually placed into the cruiser. Shortly after, while still at the residence, the man went into medical distress. Officers removed him from the cruiser and performed first aid until paramedics arrived.
The man was pronounced deceased in hospital.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case, the SIU said in a release.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online.
