Two students and a school bus driver were injured in a collision on Highway 69 in Sudbury early Monday morning.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., members from the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment of the OPP, Fire Services and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a collision between a school bus and a commercial motor vehicle in the north bound lane of Highway 69, Sudbury.

The collision occurred on the Richard Lake hill in the southern end of the city.

The driver and 12 students were on the bus at the time of the collision. Eight people were transported to the local hospital by EMS — five students as a precaution, two students received serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, while the bus driver received serious life-threatening injuries.

There were no reported injuries to the other students or the driver of the CMV.

The investigation is still ongoing on Highway 69, and the highway will remain closed in both directions as the OPP Collision Reconstructionist and members of the Traffic Collision Investigation Team assist the Nipissing West OPP officers to determine the cause of the collision.

Further updates will be provided when they become available.

The Sudbury Student Services Consortium has also issued a press release on the collision.

"This morning, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a school bus was involved in a serious collision on Hwy 69 South," said the press release. "There were 12 students on the bus at the time of the collision. All parents have been notified. Seven students and the driver were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

"The consortium and the school bus operator are fully cooperating with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as they investigate the collision. The bus was transporting students from Rainbow District School Board and Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord. The consortium and the school boards are reaching out to support the families of the students who were on the bus."
