Fatal collision - Highway 17 SUDBURY - On August 31, 2012 at 6:50 p.m. officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision on Highway 17 East, City of Greater Sudbury.

SUDBURY - On August 31, 2012 at 6:50 p.m. officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision on Highway 17 East, City of Greater Sudbury.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a westbound pick-up truck struck a pedestrian who was walking westbound on the north shoulder of the highway.

The 20-year-old female pedestrian, Saoirse Sankey, from Vancouver, B.C. was pronounced dead at the scene.  

The male driver and female passenger in the pick-up truck were not injured.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator.

The highway was fully re-opened in both direction of travel shortly after midnight.
