Two people are behind bars after a pickup truck stolen in Sault Ste. Marie was found an hour out of town — stuck in sand at a beach.

The OPP says the vehicle was reported stolen from a residence early in the morning of May 30.

“The owner had video footage of three individuals around the pickup truck at approximately 4 a.m., before it left their property,” says a news release issued by the East Algoma detachment.

Using the truck’s GPS, police were able to track the pickup to the area of Lakeshore Drive in Thessalon First Nation.

When officers arrived at the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m., they found two people attempting to get the truck out of the sand. Both were arrested.

Police say a subsequent search turned up 30 grams of suspected crystal meth with an estimated street value $3,000, a small amount of cocaine powder and drug paraphernalia.

One the two suspects also provided police with a false name, the OPP says.

Aaron Wabigwan, 37, from Thessalon First Nation is charged with:

  • Possession property obtained by crime-over $5,000
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking-methamphetamine
  • Driving while under suspension

Jessica Verdon, 29, from London is charged with:

  • Possession property obtained by crime-over $5,000
  • Obstruct peace officer

Both accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice video bail in Blind River on May 31, and were remanded into custody.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and both are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
