A heated argument between two friends on a canoe trip resulted in one woman becoming stranded on the Spanish River on a sleeping pad, according to OPP.

Police say shortly after midnight on Sunday, they received a report of a stranded person on the Spanish River in Dennie Township. Soon after, officers learned that two female friends left on a canoe trip on June 17 from Duke Lake in the Gogama area to go on a five-day canoe trip on the Spanish River.

According to police reports, an argument between the women broke out, and one left in the canoe while the other was stranded on the shore with the tent and limited supplies.

In a news release issued today, OPP say the stranded woman wrote 'SOS' in the sand before inflating her sleeping pad and using it to continue down the river. Once she came into cell service, she contacted her spouse who was able to provide location coordinates to law enforcement.

The Sudbury woman, 35, was located and rescued in good health, aside from insect bites, from the remote area on the Spanish River on Sunday at 11:20 a.m. with assistance from park rangers and the OPP's emergency response team and aviation department.
