A group of alleged alcohol thieves in northern Ontario almost got away with the crime — until two of them fell into a lake and needed to be rescued.

On Sunday, the OPP in Sioux Lookout say officers "leapt into action to save two intoxicated individuals who had fallen into the water off the public floating docks in Pelican Lake."

Both people were retrieved from the water and "assessed medically," police say.

After that, things got a lot more interesting.

Amid all the commotion, OPP say officers discovered that the two people rescued from the lake — along with a third person — were drinking alcohol stolen from a local business.

All three were subsequently arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime.

The OPP did not release their names.
