Man charged with suspend drive and several other offences

BLIND RIVER, Ont. - On June 23, 2017, shortly after 6:00 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint where the driver was suspended in the Town of Blind River.

Police located the vehicle on High Road and initiated a traffic stop. The driver could not produce a licence or documents for the vehicle. The driver was arrested and the vehicle searched. Officers found an open container of liquor in the vehicle.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

As a result of the investigation, Michael Helsop, 66 years of age, from Blind River, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Driving While Under Suspension (X2), contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
  • Use Plate not Authorized for vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the HTA;
  • Operate Motor Vehicle Without Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act; and with
  • Driving Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear in before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 16, 2017.

Three males arrested possession

BLIND RIVER, Ont. - On June 25, 2017, members of the East Algoma Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol on Highway 17 west in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., police observed a westbound vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. While speaking to the driver the officers detected an odour of marihuana emanating from the vehicle and arrested the driver and passengers. The vehicle was searched and over 60 grams of Cannabis Marihuana was located and seized.

As a result of the investigation, the driver Eric Lemieux, 21 years of age, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was charged with: Possession of a Schedule II Substance-Cannabis Marihuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Criminal Code (CC).

William St. Germain, 20 years of age, from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, was charged with: Possession of a Schedule II Substance-Cannabis Marihuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the CC.

Matthew Stanghetta, 20 years of age, from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, was charged with: Possession of a Schedule II Substance-Cannabis Marihuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the CC.

The three males accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 3, 2017.

Man charged with mischief

BRUCE MINES, Ont. - On June 24, 2017, shortly after 6:00 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 in the Town of Bruce Mines.

A passenger in a moving vehicle was throwing garbage out the window causing damage to a vehicle that was following it. The vehicle came to a stop at residence on Sprout Street and a confrontation ensued between the complainant and the male passenger. The complainant left the area and called police. OPP officers located the vehicle at a residence on Water Street in the Town of Thessalon.

As a result of the investigation, Ronald BARON, 42 years of age, from Thessalon, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Mischief Under $5000, contrary to section 430(4) of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • Causing a Disturbance, contrary to section 175(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear in before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 3, 2017.
