Northeast OPP laid 46 impaired driving charges in April

Of the drivers charged — including one in Sault Ste. Marie — police allege 30 were impaired by alcohol while the other 16 were on drugs

The Ontario Provincial Police's northeast region saw 46 impaired driving charges in the month of April across the area.

The charges were dispersed across the 12 detachment groups within the region.

A breakdown of the charges by region includes:

  • Almaguin Highlands (Burk's Falls) - five
  • East Algoma (Elliot Lake, Thessalon, Blind River) - two
  • James Bay (Kapuskasing, Hearst, Cochrane, Moosonee) - eight
  • Kirkland Lake - seven
  • Manitoulin (Little Current, Gore Bay, Espanola) - one
  • Nipissing West (Sudbury, Noelville, Cache Bay) - five
  • North Bay (North Bay, Mattawa, Powassan) - one
  • South Porcupine (South Porcupine, Iroquois Falls) - two
  • Sault Ste Marie - one
  • Superior East (Wawa, Chapleau, Hornepayne, White River, Foleyet) - one
  • Temiskaming (New Liskeard, Englehart, Temagami) - 10
  • West Parry Sound - three

Of the 46 incidents, 21 were officer-initiated traffic stops, four were from a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program, 15 were traffic complaints from the public, and six were officers responding to collisions.

A total of 30 of the drivers charged were impaired by the consumption of alcohol, while 16 were impaired as a result of the consumption of a drug.
