SUSPECT IN ROCK THROWING INCIDENT INJURED

(Garden River First Nation, Ont.) One young offender was taken to Sault Area Hospital over the weekend after she fled the scene of a rock throwing incident.

Last night at about 7:30 p.m. two motorists traveling on the new section of Hwy 17 reported rocks being thrown from the bridge at Noonday Road. On both occasions the rocks struck the vehicles. One rock narrowly missed the windshield of one vehicle.

An officer was responding to the call when he saw rocks being thrown at his cruiser. He stopped and saw people, a far distance away, running down the westbound lanes of Hwy 17 toward the Garden River Bridge. A short time later he heard screaming and yelling in the area of the Garden River Bridge.

He attended the scene to find a girl lying on the rocks under the bridge. The investigation indicated that two fifteen year old girls were on the Noonday Road bridge throwing rocks at passing vehicles. When they threw rocks at the police car, they fled the scene. As they were running across the Garden River Bridge one of the girls jumped off the bridge. She didn’t realize just how far down the fall was before she jumped.

The second suspect also heard the screams and came back to the first suspect. An ambulance was called to the scene and the suspect was transported to hospital. It is believed that the girl may have back injuries and several broken bones. The distance of the fall is believed to be about twenty seven (27) feet.

One girl was taken into custody at the scene. She has been charged with Mischief Endangering Life contrary to the Criminal Code. The suspect that was taken to the hospital will be charged when she is released from hospital.
