MAN FOUND DECEASED IN HIS RESIDENCE

(Brunswick House First Nation) – After receiving a 911 call shortly after 9 pm on Saturday, June 28th, 2008 officers from the Superior East Chapleau OPP Detachment and Ambulance responded to Brunswick House First Nation regarding a male that was located in a residence deceased. Deceased is Eli James TAYLOR, age 52, from Brunswick House First Nations. Police are treating this investigation as a homicide and the investigation is continuing.

The post mortem examination was scheduled today in Sudbury at the Sudbury General Hospital with results pending.

The Nishnawbe-Aski Police requested the assistance of Ontario Provincial Police with this matter. The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by members of the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Crime Unit, OPP Chapleau Detachment and North East Region Criminal Operations, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch Acting Detective Inspector Rene Bazinet.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO FATAL MOTOR COLLISION INVOLVING OFF DUTY OPP OFFICER

(Nairn Centre,ON) - At 3:00 pm on Sunday June 29, 2008, Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two vehicle collision on Hwy 17 Nairn Township approximately 3 kilometers west of Nairn Centre.

The driver of the motorcycle received fatal injuries and has now been identified as Detective Sergeant Paul Clairmont of the Sudbury Unit of the OPP Investigation and Enforcement Bureau assigned to the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario. Detective Sergeant Clairmont was off duty and operating his personal motorcycle eastbound on Hwy 17 when it came into collision with a westbound Pontiac Sunfire.

The two occupants of the Sunfire were taken to the Espanola General Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and have been released. Their names are not being released at this time.

Highway 17 at Nairn Centre was closed due to this serious motor vehicle collision for 10 hours while the OPP conducted the investigation. The highway has now been fully opened.

The investigation into the collision is continuing with the assistance of the Northeast Regional Forensic Unit and a Technical Traffic Collision Investigator and Re-constructionist.

First Three Days of Holiday Weekend Traffic Blitz Nets 111 Charges

Sault Ste Marie Detachment and Traffic And Marie Unit officers have had a busy start to the long weekend. Officers issued 111 provincial offence act charges as of Sunday the 29th June . Most charges were for speeding and seat belt violations but also charges under the Off Road Vehicle Act and the Liquor License Act were issued. Officers will continue with strict traffic enforcement through to the end of Canada Day.

RIDE Checks Result in Drug Charges

For the first Three days of the Canada Day long weekend OPP officers in Sault Ste Marie conducted RIDE in 12 locations across the Sault Ste Marie OPP patrol area. Out of some 500 vehicles checked 4 12 Hour Suspensions, 2 Liquor Act Charges, several Highway Traffic Act charges were laid. Also during one of these RIDE checks on Hwy # 556 in Aweres Twp. Conducted at 10:25 p.m. on the 27th of June a disqualified driver was discovered, the driver was also found to be in possession narcotics. Charged with drive while disqualified and two counts of Possession of a controlled substance for being in possession of 3gm’s of suspected cocaine and 1.7 gm’s of suspected marihuana is James Claude Myers age 32 of 366 Henry St. Sault Ste Marie. Officers will continue RIDE over the remainder of the long weekend.

NEW ATV’s at Sault Ste Marie Detachment Net Charges During First Patrol

Sault Ste Marie Detachment recently received two new ATV’s for detachment use. The machines were put to use on Saturday north of the City. Numerous riders were checked resulting in 1 12 hours suspension, 2 no helmet , 2 two people on ATV and one no plate charge. In one particularly disturbing incident a man was driving his machine with two very young children on the machine with no helmets on the children. As the popularity of ATV’s increase, the OPP are investigating more and more serious accidents involving the machines. Speed, Alcohol and failure to wear helmets are the primary contributing factors to these crashes, injuries and deaths. The OPP look forward to making our trails safer through regular patrols, public education and strict safety enforcement.
