(Goulais River, Ont.) A R.I.D.E. spot check at the intersection of Hwy 552 and Goulais Mission Road found another person literally drinking and driving.

On Friday 22 June 2007 members of the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit were conducting a roadside spot check. A pick up truck came through the spot check and the officers could see that the validation tag on the licence plate had expired.

A closer check of the driver soon revealed that he was drinking and driving. The cold beer on the floor between his feet was just a little obvious to the officers.

Further testing at the scene and back at the police station indicated that the driver was over the legal limit to be driving.

Fifty six (56) year old Terrance MITCHELL of Tilley Road in Sault Ste Marie has been charged with one count of Driving While Over the Legal Limit contrary to the Criminal Code and Having Open Liquor in a Vehicle contrary to the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario

TOW TRUCK DRIVER INJURED WHILE REMOVING CRASH VEHICLE

(Mamainse Harbour, Ont.) A tow truck driver was seriously injured over the weekend while attempting to get a vehicle out of the ditch near Mamainse Harbour.

On Saturday 23 June 2007 officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP were at the scene of a single motor vehicle crash about 4 km north of Mamainse Harbour. A car had attempted to pass other traffic and lost control when it hit the gravel shoulder. The car skidded across the roadway and rolled over into the ditch.

The two occupants of the car were wearing their seatbelts and were lucky to only receive minor injures.

A tow truck from Sault Ste Marie attended the scene and was removing the car from the ditch. The cable attachment on the truck snapped and the hooking mechanism flew back and hit the tow truck driver in the face.

The tow truck driver was taken to Sault Area Hospital by ambulance with serious head injuries. He has been admitted to hospital and had to under go surgery.

WOMAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING HER SPOUSE

(Searchmont, Ont.) Police have charged a Searchmont woman with assault after she assaulted her spouse several times on Saturday night.

At about 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to a home in Searchmont. Investigation revealed that the couple was out at another home when a disagreement took place between the homeowner and the female. They were asked to leave the home and they complied with the request.

While enroute to their home the female assaulted the man several times. Police took the woman into custody and have charged her with assault. She has been released from custody with several conditions.

SUNDAY MORNING ROLLOVER PUTS TWO IN HOSPITAL

(Goulais River, Ont.) A crash on Goulais Mission Road in Goulais River over the weekend sent two people to hospital with serious injuries.

On Sunday morning at about 11:45 a.m. a mini van was traveling west on Goulais Mission Road. The eighty four (84) year old driver went off the roadway and into a ditch. The mini van then hit a driveway culvert and rolled over end to end.

All four occupants of the mini van were taken to Sault Area hospital by ambulance. Two of the occupants have been admitted to the hospital with what police believe are serious back injures.

Police believe that if all four had not been wearing their seat belts that some of the occupants would have been killed by the impact. The ages of the injured parties range from sixty three(63) to eighty four (84) years old

Eighty four (84) year old Matthew ROBINSON of Goulais River has been charged with Driving with No Licence and Fail To Drive in Marked Lane contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

BAIL COURT FOR ONE OF TWO SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD OFFENDERS

(Echo Bay, Ont.) Two Sault Ste Marie youths have been charged after police found them driving with stolen licence plates.

Last night at about midnight an officer stopped a vehicle on Hwy 17 in Echo Bay. The licence plates on the vehicle were reported stolen from Sault Ste Marie late in May of this year.

The driver was a seventeen (17) year old female from Sault Ste Marie. She was charged with one count of Possession of Stolen Property and numerous Highway Traffic Act offences.

The passenger, a seventeen (17) year old Sault Ste Marie boy, was also arrested and held for bail court this morning. He is charged with one count of Possession of Stolen Property and three counts of Breach of Probation.

JOINT MNR AND OPP PATROLS FINDS LOTS OF VIOLATIONS

(Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) A joint patrols with MNR Conservation Officers and members of the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit found lots of violations on area lakes and back roads

Officers in plain clothes with an unmarked truck and boat patrolled area lakes and rivers north of Sault Ste Marie.

The officers charged six people with having open liquor in their boat. Two others were charged with not having sufficient life jackets on board and one person was charged with driving his ATV down the road with no helmet on.

Twenty six other people were extended some sympathy from the officers as they were given warnings for safety equipment in boats, fishing regulations and warnings under the Off Road Vehicle Act.

DRIVER CHARGED WITH DRINKING AND DRIVING OFFENCES

(Desbarats, Ontario) On Saturday June 23, 2007 a member of the East Algoma OPP stopped a motor vehicle on Government Road in Johnson Township.

The driver Richard E. POLLARD (39) of Desbarats, Ontario was subsequently charged under the Criminal Code with:

Impaired Driving – Motor Vehicle, Section 253(a) and
Over 80 – Motor Vehicle, Section 253(b)

POLLARD was released on a Promise To Appear in Thessalon Court on August 16, 2007.

DAMAGE SUSTAINED TO MOTOR VEHICLES

(Thessalon, Ontario) On Friday June 22, 2007 the East Algoma – Thessalon Detachment received a complaint regarding damage to motor vehicles located in the main parking lot of Dave Seabrook Motors on Main Street, Thessalon, Ontario.

Suspects ran across the hoods of four motor vehicles causing approximately $300.00 damage to each hood. The damage occurred between June 20 – 22, 2007.
