OPERATION LOOKOUT WORKING WELL ON MANITOULIN

On Wednesday 13 Jun 2012 at 1:06 pm the OPP Provincial Communications Centre received a call from a motorist on their cell phone advising of a traffic concern on Highway 6 in the Town of Espanola. A 2012 Grand Cherokee Jeep was driving erratically on Hwy 6 and almost caused a collision. The alert motorist picked up their cell phone and called *OPP (*677) which put them in touch with the OPP communications centre. The complainant was able to give the description of the vehicle, the driver and the direction of travel which was southbound on Hwy 6 from Espanola. Officers from the Manitoulin OPP were notified with the information and proceeded northbound on Hwy 6. The vehicle was observed and stopped in the Birch Island area. As a result of the information received the driver a 32 year-old woman from Brampton, Ontario was charged under the Highway Traffic Act as a result of her driving behaviour.

Constable Allan Boyd Community Services Officer for the Manitoulin OPP advised that Operation Lookout is an excellent program where the public and police can work together to make our highways safer. “The police cannot be everywhere at once and many times officers don’t see the driving habits of the public because when they see a black & White cruiser they tend to behave themselves. However the majority of the public obey the traffic laws and drive in a safe manner. When they observe someone driving aggressively or possibly impaired they now can do something about it” said Constable Boyd. “By calling 911 or *OPP (*677) on any cell phone and reporting the details, being our eyes and ears out there officers now have the information and tools to intercept and remove if required people who may be a harm to others on the road. Since we started the program in 2001, Manitoulin OPP have received over 1500 calls and many of those calls the drivers were stopped and checked. This is a true example of where the police and community work together to make our highways safe.”
