MANITOULIN MAN ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT On Tuesday 15 July 2008 at 1:21 am Manitoulin OPP officers were called to a disturbance taking place at a residence in Manitowaning.
MANITOULIN MAN ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT

On Tuesday 15 July 2008 at 1:21 am Manitoulin OPP officers were called to a disturbance taking place at a residence in Manitowaning. Officers arrived to find that a female had been a victim of a very serious sexual assault causing injuries. She was taken to the Manitoulin Health Centre for treatment of the injuries and later released. As a result of an extensive investigation by the Manitoulin OPP, Northeast Regional OPP Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Unit. A person has been charged. Arrested and charged with one count of Sexual Assault Causing Bodily Harm is Tibor NAGY age 53 of 20th Side Road, Tekhummah, Ontario. Mr. NAGY was arrested and taken to bail court and has been remanded into custody until his next court appearance on 30 June 2008 at Gore Bay Bail Court.

MANITOULIN OPP INVESTIGATING SUSPICIOUS FIRE

On Sunday 20 July 2008, Manitoulin OPP were called to assist the NEMI Fire Dept. in regards to a suspicious fire that was set in a garbage can at the Low Island Pavilion. Luckily no damage was caused the Fire Dept was able to extinguish the fire quickly. Three security cameras located at the Pavilion will be checked to see if the persons responsible were captured on video. If anyone has any knowledge about this crime they are asked to call OPP or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE….. ATV DRIVER CHARGED!

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) July 20th, 2008 at approximately 6:00 a.m. police received a call to attend the area of Esten Lake Beach in regards to a possible ATV accident. On scene police spoke with the two parties involved. The driver was removed from the area and transported to the Elliot Lake St. Joseph’s Hospital to be treated for his injuries. The other involved party was cautioned by police not to drive the ATV and to wait for police to return.

At 7:30 a.m. when police were returning to the scene, they observed the ATV approaching them. The ATV was stopped and the driver was identified as the other involved party that police had cautioned earlier not to drive.

Charged with Impaired Operation and Over 80 is a 17-year-old male youth of Elliot Lake. The name of the youth will not be released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake youth court on October 7th, 2008.

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) Officers of the East Algoma OPP in conjunction with the RIDE team were busy this weekend with events in the City of Elliot Lake.

Charged are the following:

Matthew Scott STEPHENSON (27) of Sault Ste Marie. STEPHENSON is charged with Failure to Provide Breath Sample and Impaired Driving. STEPHENSON scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on September 2nd, 2008.

Christopher Leigh LACKEY (30) of Elliot Lake. LACKEY is charged with Over 80 – Operate, Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle. LACKEY is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on September 2nd, 2008.

Keith SKANES (35) of Bonnyville, Alberta. SKANES is charged with Impaired Driving and Over 80. SKANES is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on September 2nd, 2008.

Robert KENNEDY (20) of Chelmsford. KENNEDY is charged with Impaired Driving, Over 80 and Class G2 License Holder – B.A.C. above zero. KENNEDY is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake court on September 4, 2008.

DIRT BIKE DRIVER CHARGED

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On July 19th, 2008, while working at the Elliot Lake Airport during the annual drag races officers of the East Algoma OPP were advised by an event co-coordinator that a dirt bike driver had been doing wheelies all day and may have been endangering the lives of pedestrians and spectators.

Officers attended the area with the co-coordinator and requested the suspect leave the property. The accused became very irate and caused a disturbance while packing up his property.

Short time later officers observed the accused jump on his bike and begin to rev the engine. The suspect allegedly began to do circles around the tent area, popping wheelies and continued proceeded to the runway and continued this behavior. The runway was full of spectators enjoying the drag races. Police stopped and arrested the driver.

Charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle is Ryan ROGERS (26) of Lively, Ontario. ROGERS is scheduled to appear in Elliot Lake Court on October 27, 2008.

DRUGS LOCATED IN MOTOR VEHICLE

(Highway 17, Plummer Additional Township) On Sunday July 20, 2008 at approximately 3:30 p.m. the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Drug Enforcement Unit and the East Algoma Thessalon OPP assisted the Sault Ste. Marie RCMP Drug Enforcement Unit with stopping a motor vehicle on Highway 17 east of Bruce Mines, Ontario.

Cannabis Resin, Oxycodone pills and Ecstasy pills were located in the motor vehicle. The estimated value of the drugs is $1,825.

Yvan Yvon BLANCHARD (46) of Aweres Township, Ontario and Debbie PEPLOW (47) of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario has been charged under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act with:

Possession Schedule II Cannabis resin – over 1 gram
Possession for the Purpose Schedule III
Possession Schedule I

BLANCHARD and PEPLOW were arrested and released on a Promise to Appear in Thessalon court on September 29, 2008.

MISCHIEF TO LOCAL PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

(Hilton Beach, Ontario) On Thursday July 17, 2008 the East Algoma Thessalon OPP were contacted regarding mischief to the playground equipment located at Forbes Park in Hilton Beach, Ontario.

Red and Blue paint was used to deface the equipment. Various items were painted on the equipment including the letters LOL, a happy face, DK 34, and the initials K.U.R. and M.O.M.

THEFT FROM SERVICE TRUCK

(East Line Road, Kirkwood Township) On Monday July 14, 2008 at approximately 7:20 a.m. the East Algoma Thessalon OPP were contacted regarding a theft to a service truck parked on East Line Road, North of Thessalon, Ontario.

The theft occurred sometime between Thursday July 10, 2008 at approximately 5:30 p.m. and Monday July 14, 2008 at approximately 7:00 a.m. The service truck is used to service the companies logging equipment.

A welder/generator, welding helmet and cables, a grinder, acetylene torches, bottles, hoses and gauges, and various tools in a blue toolbox were stolen from the service truck. The stolen items are estimated at $10,000.
