(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP covered over 200kms of OFSC trails over the past weekend. 74 sleds were checked with only one caution of a minor val-tag infraction was issued. Police are pleased to see trail permit compliance is up.

OPP officers were also present at the Ernie Eddy fishing derby at Twin Lakes on St-Joseph’s Island. Congratulations to the organizers, a very good turnout with over 100 fish caught.

Excessive speed, alcohol intoxication, lack of helmet use, riding on thin ice contributed to the risk of death and hospitalization associated with snowmobile use in Ontario. RIDE SMART – RIDE SAFE!

MALE CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On February 23, 2008 at approximately 2:24 a.m. the East Algoma OPP in Elliot Lake received a complaint of a possible sexual assault.

Police investigated and charged Patrick GIONETTE (20) of Blind River with one count of Sexual Assault. GIONETTE remains in custody awaiting a Bail Hearing February 25, 2008.

3 VEHICLE MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION RESULTS IN CHARGE LAID

(Fisher Township, Ont.) A motor vehicle collision on Friday, 22nd February 2008 at approximately 3:00 pm near the Batchawana River bridge on Highway 17 resulted in a charge under the Highway Traffic Act of an Oversized Vehicle – Violate Permit to 48 year old Timothy WALLS of Mifflinburg Pennsylvania who was traveling North on Highway 17 hauling a wide load.
Two southbound vehicles, one tractor trailer unit and one pick up truck were stopped to let the wide load through. A driver of a third pick up truck traveling southbound had his view obstructed by the wide load traveling northbound causing the driver to enter the shoulder, struck the guard rail, the right side of the pick up in front and the right rear of the tractor trailer unit. There were no injuries to any of the driver’s but both pick up trucks had to be towed.

ASSAULT CHARGE LAID AGAINST ONE MALE

(Batchawana First Nation, Ont.) One 32 year old male was taken into Police custody Friday evening after a report was received of an assault on an 11 year old child. The male was charged with one count of Assault contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

DON’T WALK AROUND WITH OPEN LIQUOR


(Macdonald Township, Ont.) While on routine patrol on Highway 17 in Echo Bay on Saturday the 23rd Feb. 2008 at around 1:50 pm an OPP officer observed a male walking with an open bottle of beer. Charged under the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario for Having Liquor in open container in other than licensed premises, residence or private place is 48 year old Thomas BARRY of Echo Bay, Ontario.

RIDE SPOT CHECKS RESULT IN 2 TWELVE HOUR SUSPENSIONS

(Fenwick Township, Ont.) RIDE spot checks conducted on Sunday the 24th February, 2008 resulted in two twelve hour suspensions being issued. The OPP would like to remind motorists not to DRINK AND DRIVE.

STOP AND OPP TRAFFIC AND MARINE UNIT OUT ON THE OFSC TRAILS THIS WEEKEND

(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) Officer’s from the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police Traffic Unit teamed up with S.T.O.P officer’s this past weekend patrolling the OFSC trails in and around the Sault Ste. Marie area.

73 snow machines were checked and 10 warnings were issued. Five charges were laid for operating a motorized snow vehicle without a trail permit and one charge for driving a motorized snow vehicle with a modified exhaust under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act.

On Saturday, S.T.O.P officer’s laid a speeding charge under the Highway Traffic Act in the Goulais River area where the driver of a snow machine was traveling in excess of 100 km/hr. on the OFSC trail.

Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind riders to obey speed limits and road/trail signs and always drive within your ability.
