SCHOOLS IN!!!! DRIVE WITH CARE

(East Algoma, ON.) Area kids are returning to school on Tuesday September 1 and police want to warn drivers to be extra careful, slow down and give yourself a few extra minutes to get where you are going as there will be a definite increase in traffic. With the start of school there will be lots of kids walking our streets or waiting for buses. They are excited at this time of year and are not always paying attention. Parents are asked to remind their children of road and bus safety. Lets all work together to ensure our kids are safe.

HEMPFEST RIDE INITIATIVE

(Poplar Dale Road, Aberdeen Township, Ontario) – On 27th, 28th and 29th of August, 2009 members of the Ontario Provincial Police conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks on Poplar Dale Road in Aberdeen Township (north of Bruce Mines, Ontario).

Approximately 1050 motor vehicles were checked over the 3 day period.

Results

• 2 drivers were issued a 3 day driving suspension.
• One subject was arrested for impaired operation by a drug.
• 23 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act.
• 30 charges were laid under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.
• 2 charges were laid under the Liquor Licence Act.
• 11 Notices of Drivers Licence Suspension Issued
• 1 male was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
• 5 unsafe motor vehicles were removed from the highway.
• On Friday August 28th, 2009 during the RIDE Initiative, Officers observed what appeared to be a handgun under the passenger seat of one of the vehicles. Further investigation revealed that the handgun was in fact a replica toy gun. During incidents such as this, Officers have to assume that they are dealing with a real firearm and act accordingly. We would like to remind members of the public that they should ensure items such as this are not left lying around in their motor vehicles to avoid this type of situation.
