The East Algoma OPP say they arrested a wanted man who was hiding in the attic of a house in Elliot Lake.

Police say they located the man hiding in the attic of a residence on Hillside Drive South.

The suspect had four outstanding warrants out for his arrest, including on charges of trafficking, sexual assault and numerous failure to comply with court orders.

On May 10, a hardware store on Hillside Drive South was broken into and items stolen. Video surveillance was later reviewed and the wanted man was identified as the suspect in the break-in, police say.

Thomas Renner, 39, of Elliot Lake is charged with:

  • Possession of break-in instruments
  • Resist peace officer
  • Escape lawful custody
  • Fail to comply with Probation Order (two counts)
  • Fail to comply with release order - other than to attend court (two counts)
  • Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence

The accused was scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on May 27.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Renner is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
