WAWA – Superior East OPP say two people they were looking for turned themselves in after stealing gas and evading police earlier this week.

Police say that at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday officers responded to a traffic complaint about a speeding vehicle heading north on Hwy 17, south of Wawa.

Police were also told that the occupants of the vehicle were suspects in a gas theft in the Thessalon area.

Around 11:15 a.m., officers found the sedan on Hwy 17 near Red Rock Lake in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Police say they tried to stop the vehicle using spike belts, but it was unsuccessful.

A short time later, the driver of the vehicle asked an off-duty OPP Sergeant for gas on Steephill Dam Road north of Wawa. He immediately told on-duty officers, who blocked the roadway.

Police say they found the vehicle stuck with the two occupants attempting to free it.

After failing to get the sedan out, both occupants fled on foot into the surrounding wooded area.

The Northeast Region OPP Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) members were called in to help with the search, which went through the night.

Around 8 a.m. both parties turned themselves in to the police and were arrested.

Both parties are facing numerous criminal charges as a result of the incident.
