Detachment Commander’s Message on Personal Mobility Device

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Ron Faulkner would like to remind all motorists that personal mobility devices (Motorized Wheelchairs or medical scooters) are to be treated in the same way as pedestrian travel.

Motorized wheelchairs should utilize the sidewalk or when not available, the left shoulder of the roadway, facing oncoming traffic.

The Personal Mobility Device does not require registration, licence plates, driver’s licence or vehicle insurance.

Operators of a personal mobility device are expected to ride on the left.

Motorists, please allow a meter on either side of the mobility device as a safety zone.

“Inspector Faulkner suggests as an added safety feature, to add florescent flags or markings to the personal mobility device to assist in the visibility.”
