WATCH FOR WILDLIFE

(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) Wild animals are unpredictable at all times. However, May and June are one of the peak times when the risk of a collision is highest. Wildlife collisions occur most frequently between 5:00 am -7:00 am and 6 pm – midnight. Animals are looking for road salt in ditches and trying to escape biting insects.

The OPP offer the following driving tips to reduce the risk of a wildlife collision:

1) SLOW DOWN! Visibility is greatly reduced at night and so is your reaction time.
2) Avoid driving during dusk or dawn if possible.
3) Use high beams when possible.
4) Scan the road continuously, shoulder to shoulder.
5) At night watch for reflection of animals’ eyes – they will blink, glow and move.
6) Drive cautiously through area identified as high risk by wildlife crossing signs.
7) ALWAYS slow down when passing wildlife – it may suddenly jump into your lane.
8) Keep braking after an animal has crossed – there are usually more.
9) Don’t assume the animal will move out of your way – most freeze in a vehicle’s headlights.
