FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION – HWY. 144

(SUDBURY, ON) – On July 26, 2012 at 4:37 p.m. officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 144, City of Greater Sudbury (at High Falls).

Preliminary investigation reveals that three vehicles were directly involved and one vehicle was indirectly involved. 

The male driver of a southbound Mazda car lost control of his vehicle and in doing so, entered the northbound lane where he struck two northbound vehicles (a Chevrolet Cobalt car and a Ford van).

The female driver of the Chevrolet Cobalt was pronounced dead at the scene.  Her male passenger was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Health Sciences North in Sudbury with serious but non-life threatening injuries. 

The male driver, lone occupant of the Mazda car was transported to Health Sciences North by ambulance and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The male driver and female passenger in the van were also transported to Health Sciences North by ambulance where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator who remain on-scene at this time.

The highway was completely closed to traffic until 11:00 p.m. and it is now open to one lane.
