TRACTOR TRAILER ROLLOVER

DRIVER ECEIVES MINOR INJURIES

(Fenwick Twp., ON) – At 6:20 pm yesterday evening OPP and Goulais River First Response and the MTO were called to a tractor trailer rollover on Highway 17 North in Havilland Township.

A tractor trailer loaded with 8 foot logs rolled into the northbound ditch. The cab of the tractor trailer blocked the highway across both lanes and the log debris was scattered both on the highway and in the ditch.

The highway was closed for several hours for clean up. The trucking company will return to the scene this morning to pick up the remaining logs.

The 40 year old male driver from Goulais River received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

DRIVERS – ALWAYS STOP FOR THE SCHOOL BUS

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) – OPP remind motorists that whether on a city street, highway or country road, and regardless of the speed limit and the number of lanes, motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing and stop arm extended out. Only on highways separated by a median strip is oncoming traffic not required to stop. Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move.

Within the past three days OPP have charged three driver’s with Failing to Stop for School Bus under the Provincial Offences Act of Ontario. One incident occurred in the Thessalon area, one on the Batchewana First Nation, and one in the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

The penalties for a first offence range from $400.00 to $2,000.00 and six demerit points. Each subsequent offence ranges from $1000.00 to $4,000.00, six demerit points and possible jail time up to six months.

It is also important to note that a vehicle owner can be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus, even if they are not the driver.
