'Family dispute' leads to obstruction charge in Thessalon First Nation

OPP say 'unwanted family member' had an outstanding bench warrant for his arrest

THESSALON FIRST NATION – The OPP say a man has been charged after a wanted person fled from police in an incident on Saturday.

At around 9 a.m., the East Algoma detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and North East Canine Unit responded to a family dispute on Maple Ridge Road in Thessalon First Nation, according to an OPP news release.

Police attended the residence and were told that the "unwanted family member" had an outstanding bench warrant and had fled police. 

Later, the OPP received another call and were advised the family member had returned to the residence. At around 10 a.m., police made an arrest.

William Simon, 38, from Thessalon First Nation is charged with:

  • Failure to comply with undertaking
  • Obstruct peace officer

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Oct. 3.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Simon is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
