Two suspects from Wikwemikong are facing numerous charges following a motor vehicle collision on Highway 6 near Birch Island at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 9
Manitoulin Detachment members of the OPP attended the scene, where two occupants of the vehicle in question were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Police determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance, and an arrest was made,” according to a media release issued by the OPP.
A search resulted in police seizing approximately 40 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $4,000, approximately five grams of suspected crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $800, and approximately 15 grams of suspected fentanyl with an estimated street value of $4,500.
There are two suspects, both from Wikwemikong, who face numerous charges.
The 42-year-old driver faces the following charges:
- Operation while impaired - blood drug concentration
- Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
- Dangerous operation
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I substance - opioid
- Fail to provide required document
A 37-year-old passenger faces the following charges:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
Both accused are scheduled to appear in court in Gore Bay on Feb. 25.
In their media release, the OPP encourages those who see suspected impaired driving to not hesitate in dialing 911 to report it.
