Drug suspect busted in Sudbury, minutes after granted bail on other drug charges

OPP pulled over a taxi on Feb. 7 that allegedly contained illegal drugs; one passenger had just been released on bail less than an hour earlier

A traffic stop on Feb. 7 not only led to two people being arrested on drug charges, but the arrest of a man who had been released on bail that same day for drug charges.

Manitoulin Detachment (Espanola) Ontario Provincial Police on patrol on Highway 17 in Walden stopped an eastbound taxi for a traffic violation at 4:43 p.m. that day.

“During the investigation, police recognized two of the passengers from a drug-related incident that occurred on Feb. 6,” OPP said in a news release. “The one passenger had been released following a bail hearing at approximately 4 p.m., where they were placed on a no communication order with the other passenger.”

Besides, police say they also located and seized approximately 87 grams of suspected opioids (fentanyl), approximately 35 grams of suspected methamphetamine, approximately 20 grams of suspected cocaine, and approximately half a gram of suspected heroin.

As a result, two people were arrested and charged.

A 20-year-old from North York is charged with:

  • Failure to comply with release order - other than attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance - Heroin, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance - Cocaine, contrary to section 5(1) of the CDSA

The accused had a bail hearing on Feb. 8 and was remanded into custody.

A 25-year-old from Sheguindah First Nation is charged with:

  • Failure to comply with undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the CC
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance - Heroin, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance - Cocaine, contrary to section 5(1) of the CDSA

The accused had a bail hearing on Feb. 8 and was remanded into custody.
