Driver charged with impaired after near head-on crash on Highway 17

A Serpent River First Nation driver is facing a pair of drug charges after nearly being involved in a crash on Highway 17 yesterday.

Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police responded Tuesday to a report of an eastbound pickup truck moving at a high rate of speed, swerving all over the road, and nearly causing a head-on crash near Pronto Road in the Township of the North Shore.

Around 1:10 p.m., police stopped the vehicle near Woodlawn Drive in Blind River.

Police say the officers believed the driver was intoxicated and arrested the individual. Police also say that the driver was in possession of approximately 7 grams of suspected fentanyl.

Adrian St. Denis, 58, has been charged with:

  • operation while impaired - drug
  • possession of a schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin

The vehicle involved was towed and impounded for seven days while the driver's licence was suspended for 90 days.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on Nov. 7.
