Driver charged during Hilton Beach traffic stop

A 57-year-old faces charges following a traffic stop in Hilton Beach over the weekend. 

In a news release issued today, Sault Ste. Marie OPP said the Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team (TIME) was on patrol in Hilton Beach yesterday when they saw a pickup truck turn from Highway 548 onto South Street.

Police say the driver was known to the officer as being suspended from driving.

Police then conducted a traffic stop and as a result, John Atkins, 57 years old of Hilton Beach, was charged with:

  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Aug. 4, 2022. 

The vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days.
