Cambridge driver faces impaired charges in the Sault

A driver from Cambridge was arrested yesterday morning after OPP responded to a traffic complaint that originated near Desbarats.

The driver in question was stopped entering the Sault Ste. Marie city limits and charged.

Full text of a news release regarding this incident follows. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

TARBUTT-TARBUTT ADDITIONAL TOWNSHIP - On Sept. 25, 2023 shortly after 11:45 a.m., members from the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving a westbound white pickup truck swerving all over the road on Highway 17 near Smith Road within Tarbutt-Tarbutt Additional Township.

OPP located the westbound pickup truck entering Sault Ste. Marie city limits and initiated a traffic stop on Highway 17 and Trunk Road. While speaking to the driver, police determined alcohol had been consumed. The driver was arrested and transported to Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment for further testing.

The pickup truck was searched, and OPP located an open can of beer. The pickup truck was towed, impounded for seven days and the driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension.

As a result, Alexander Vasquez-Osegueda, 60 years of age from Cambridge, Waterloo, was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
    •    Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on Nov. 13, 2023.
