Brinks driver and company charged in connection with fatal crash

A 57-year-old from Thessalon died at the scene last November in Bruce Mines

As a result of an investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police, the driver of a Brinks Canada Ltd. vehicle has been charged with careless driving causing death in connection with a four-vehicle crash on Highway 17 east of Bruce Mines last Nov. 26.

In addition, the company has also been charged, according to an OPP news release.

A 57-year-old from Thessalon died at the scene.

Michael Matthews, 64, from Prince Township was charged with:

  • Careless driving cause death
  • Operate vehicle-fail to display inspection sticker or proof
  • Fail to maintain daily log
  • Fail to surrender completed daily inspection report

Brinks Canada Ltd. from Sudbury has been charged with:

  • Permit person to drive commercial motor vehicle not in accordance with regulations
  • Permit operation of vehicle-fail to display inspection sticker or proof
  • Fail to ensure daily inspection is conducted properly

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Provincial Offences in Sault Ste Marie on March 19.
