The East Algoma detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were part of a high-risk takedown this week that also involved the OPP's Emergency Response Team and the Anishinabek Police Service.

The takedown happened after police received a report that an eastbound SUV had fired shots at another vehicle on Highway 17 west of Iron Bridge.

Police received the report around 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police say that the shooting happened around 45 minutes earlier and resulted in the SUV fleeing the scene eastbound. Manitoulin OPP found the suspect vehicle near Massey and stopped the vehicle on Highway 17 in Webbwood.

The driver and passenger, as well as the vehicle itself, were searched.

Police say that $272 was found on the driver, $3,000 on the passenger — and another $100,000 in the vehicle. Police say they also confiscated three cell phones, a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The driver of the vehicle, Hamza Suleiman Jama, 27, from Brampton is charged with:

  • failure to comply with release order-other that to attend court
  • drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Espanola on Sept. 19, 2024, and was remanded into custody.

The investigation is ongoing. None of the allegations have been tested in court and Jama is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
