Sudbury man arrested in connection with murder in Jocelyn Township

The East Algoma OPP crime unit is continuing the investigation under direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service

Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police have arrested and charged a 49-year-old man from Sudbury in relation to the murder investigation in Jocelyn Township, a small municipality located on St. Joseph Island.

“On Jan. 6 at approximately 2:45 p.m., the East Algoma OPP responded to a report of a deceased person that was located in the vicinity of P Line Road, in Jocelyn Township,” the OPP said in a release. 

The East Algoma OPP crime unit is continuing the investigation under direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, working in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

The OPP has arrested and charged Derrick Sutton with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Accessory after the fact to murder, section 240 CC
  • Indignity to a dead body, section 182(b)

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 30 in Sudbury.

“There is no threat to public safety. Further information will be released as it becomes available,” the release said. 

By email, Sgt. Michelle Simard with the OPP could not confirm if more arrests are expected. 

"The investigation is still on-going. We will release more information as it becomes available," Simard said. 

On Jan. 20, police released the name of the victim, Corey Hynes, 52, from Sudbury.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
