13 drivers handed speeding tickets during Canada Road Safety Week

More than half of 332 deaths on OPP patrolled highways attributed to speed, alcohol/drugs, inattentive driving and lack of seatbelts

Members from the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment took part in Canada Road Safety Week initiative which took place between May 14-20, 2019. 

Canada Road Safety Week is an annual enforcement and education driven initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. The focus is to increase public awareness regarding safe driving, and help reduce injuries and save lives on our roads.

During the week officers conducted the following:

  • seven R.I.D.E. checks
  • 13 speeding infractions issued
  • one impaired driving charge
  • one warn range suspension issued 
  • one fail to yield

The OPP would like to remind the motoring public that more than half of the 332 deaths on OPP patrolled highways were attributed to speed, alcohol/drugs, inattentive driving and a lack of seatbelt use.
