BRAMPTON, Ont. — Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man experiencing a mental health crisis died Sunday morning in Brampton, Ont.

The Special Investigations Unit says Peel Regional Police were called to a reported disturbance at a local apartment building at around 4 a.m.

Once there, it says officers had an unspecified interaction with a 34-year-old man and took him into custody under the Mental Health Act.

The SIU says the man went into distress shortly afterward, requiring police to perform first aid, but he was later pronounced dead in hospital.

No details about the man's identity or the particulars of his interaction with police were immediately available.

The SIU investigates all incidents involving police in which a person is killed, injured or accused of sexual assault.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published April 2, 2023.
