ZAPPACOSTA, Umberto “Tony” – March 17, 1934 – January 11, 2025

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Tony “Zapper”, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 90.

Predeceased by his parents Donato and Carmella, sister Lena and brother Camy of Italy. Cherished husband and best friend of Maria (nee D’Amelio) for 58 years.  Adored and best dad to Anna-Lisa Tadashore, Paula Pastore (Giacomo), Claudia Orr and Anthony Zappacosta (Cindy).  His love for his kids never wavered. Much loved Nonno of Daniel Gioia, David Gioia, Joshua Pastore, Francesca Pastore (David), Jordan Orr (Halli), Brandon Orr (Sarah), Marc Zappacosta (Kiera), Paul Zappacosta and Ronny Zappacosta.  They were his pride and joy and often referred to them as his very own soccer team.  Special Zio of Sara Gilles (Dan). Loving him from afar are his brother-in-law Fernando (Eva), sister-in-law Assunta (Adriano) and many nieces and nephews from Italy.  Loved brother-in-law of Mario D’Amelio. Family was important to dad and he cherished keeping the connections with them all.

Tony arrived in Halifax from Italy in 1954 in search of opportunity. He worked in Montreal, Ottawa and finally landed in Sault Ste. Marie and ultimately secured work as a crane operator at Algoma Steel for 38 years. Better known to his colleagues as “Cha-Cha”.

Tony loved life to the fullest and for those who knew him, would often hear him say: “WHAT A BEAUTY”.
He always loved to talk and more importantly eat his FIGS! He enjoyed dancing and music fed his soul.  He was always the last to leave the dance floor and would often be heard telling the Pulente brothers: “ONE MORE TIME”.

His home away from home was the Marconi where he held committee member positions and played his favourite sport bocce. He made many lifelong friends! His hobbies included timeless traditions like forging for mushrooms, gardening, sausage making and smelt fishing where every year you were sure to find a pail on your doorstep.

Dad loved his family with his whole heart. He played hard and loved even harder. He certainly did "Life His Way".

A private family service was held at Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East; 705-759-2522) on Thursday, January 16, 2025 with Rev. Peter Nwachukwu who officiated. Entombment took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations (payable by cheque or online) to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society or to St. Veronica’s Catholic Church would be appreciated by the family. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the family.

A special thank you to the Angels on the McCarroll Lake Wing at Extendicare Maple View for the love and care shown to our dad.
