Passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2024 at the Sault Area Hospital in his 91st year. Loving husband of Betty for over 65 years. Wally died peacefully with his wife and best friend Betty beside him along with his family. Cherished father of Dean (Joyce), Dereck (Melissa) and Dale (Lisa). Poppy was a proud grandfather of Daryl (Samantha), Wade, Drew (Mackenzie), Cameron and Sophie and great grandfather of Jada, Paxton and Dylan. Survived by his sister Muriel Stiles (Norm). Predeceased by his parents Gordon and Florence Whitmell and his siblings Everett, Norman, Donald and Mildred.

Wally was born and raised in a rural area near Parry Sound and at the age of 16 came to Jones' Landing where he worked in the bush logging with horses. He then became a bulldozer operator for Jones Brothers. Later he worked at Tribag and Coppercore mines. Wally ended his career at the Tube Mill. Having retired at 55, he bought his own backhoe and dump truck. He worked outside and was happy meeting so many nice people. He was always a family man. His sons, grandchildren, and neighbourhood children always came first. Wally will be greatly missed, but he will always live on in our hearts and memories.

Friends and family are invited to visit Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Road, 705-945-7758) on Friday, August 16, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service to be held in the Chapel on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Goulais River Cemetery. Memorial donations to Tracy’s Dream or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

A very special thank you to the nurses and doctors on 2C and 3B at the Sault Area Hospital for the compassionate and attentive care they showed Wally during his stay.  Thank you to Dr. Booth and Dr. Apostle, as well as nurses Nancy and Sierra that took such great care of him while he was at home. Nancy and Sierra were so much more to Wally and the family than his caretakers, they became like family and we are all so grateful for their compassion and care. www.northwoodfuneral.com
