WALSH, David Joseph Hugh

Posted

Walsh (1)

April 18, 1954 - July 29, 2021

David passed away after a short but hard-fought battle with brain cancer.  Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Dave managed his illness with strength, determination and perseverance.  On his final day, he was surrounded by both his children Ian Kearney Walsh and Cameron David Walsh (Calgary) and his best friend and longtime partner Wendy Kennedy of Thessalon, Ontario.

He was predeceased by his father David Kearney Walsh, his mother Carole Macmillan, his brother Michael Walsh and his stepson Anthony Kennedy.

David was born in Montreal, Quebec and his family moved to Calgary, Alberta shortly thereafter. He attended St. Mary’s high school and later graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor’s Degree in geography.

Dave married Simone Leblanc in 1979 and has two sons.

He began his career with Husky Oil in I.T. During the oil and gas recession, Dave was fortunate to be hired by Syncrude and relocated his family to Fort McMurray. Dave worked as an I.T. Specialist and later transferred to Mine Operations and spent his remaining career as a dozer operator for Team 503. Dave often declared “It was the best decision I ever made when I transferred to the Mines”.

David later met his current partner Wendy Kennedy and later after 28 years of dedicated service with Syncrude, David retired and left Alberta and bought a retirement home on Cummings Lake near Thessalon, Ontario.

David was a kind, loving and intelligent man and lived his life with a quiet determination and humour.

His love for Sports mainly included hockey, and CFL football. He was a passionate fan of the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Stampeders. His interests varied greatly, he was well rounded and versed in many categories, such as planes, cars, New York Times Crossword puzzle and practically dominated the field in any game of trivia.

A “perfect” day for Dave, was to gather his family and friends over for a BBQ and entertain them with his huge repertoire of music and cap that all with a sunset cruise on the pontoon boat at Cummings Lake.

His family welcomes his friends to join them for a celebration of David’s life at his home (6516 Hwy 129, Thessalon, Ontario) on Friday, August 6, 2021, at 2:00 pm.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research (payable online or by cheque) would be appreciated.
