With deepest sorrow, the family of Steven van Haaften announces his death on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at home, surrounded by his family.

He leaves his wife of 41 years Jami-Val (nee McAdam), his daughter Karen Anne of Toronto, and his son Peter James of Montréal. He is survived by his brother Martin van Haaften (Julie), sisters Pauline Hicks (Steve), and Carla Newport (Dave), sister-in-law Rhea Ledyit (Sam), and his cousin Rob Regeer (Anneke) in the Netherlands. Steve was predeceased by his parents Margaretha (nee Smit) and Peter van Haaften and his sister Flora Green (Richard). Steve will be missed by many nieces and nephews from Peterborough, Ottawa and Sault Ste. Marie.

Born in Amsterdam (Netherlands) in 1951, Steve emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1956, becoming a Canadian citizen in 1971. Steve was a geologist with the Ontario Geological Survey between 1979 - 2006 in Tweed, Red Lake, Kemptville and Sudbury. He was a devoted family man, loved the outdoors and was especially proud of his children and all their accomplishments.

Steve and his family appreciated the care received from Dr. McLean, Dr. Wilson and the palliative care team who provided care in the home. Memorial contributions payable by cheque or online to the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library would be appreciated. A private ceremony will be held in October, followed by interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522).
