November 7, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Pauline Sykes of Playa Bejuco, Costa Rica and Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, November 7th, 2021, at the age of 71 years.

Pauline was born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 27th, 1950. She immigrated to Canada in 1953 with her parents, Margaret and Joseph McDonald, and siblings Joseph, Alice, and Philip. The family was later joined by Peter, Pauline’s youngest brother. Pauline grew up in Winnipeg, MB and graduated high school in 1967. She went on to graduate from university and achieve her CPA, MBA and other designations, which allowed her the opportunity to travel the world as a very successful consultant. Pauline met her husband John Sykes in Vancouver, they spent the first years of their marriage in Sault Ste Marie, ON where they had their first daughter, Keira. They then moved to Ile des Chênes, MB where they had their second daughter Meriya and Pauline met some of her best lifelong friends. Pauline accomplished much in her personal and professional life. She enjoyed travelling, especially with her kids and grandkids. She also enjoyed skiing, diving and of course Sunday Funday! During one of her adventures Pauline visited and fell in love with Costa Rica. She later retired and made her home there. Pauline thrived in the rich and vibrant community of Costa del Sol during her winters. She also enjoyed her summers watching her grandkids in Indian Beach, BC and Wilderness Village, AB. Pauline will be most remembered for her strong will and independence. She had a kind and generous heart and lived her life to the fullest. She was always looking for ways to spend fun and meaningful times with her girls and grandkids. Family meant everything to her and she delighted in watching her grandkids grow and make her proud.

Pauline is survived by her two daughters, Keira (Kevin) Sernowsky and Meriya (Jaron) Dyble; and her four grandchildren Nayla, Rhett, Raena, and Emryn. We also can’t forget “her” super dog Coco Chanel. She is also survived by her two brothers and their families, Phil and Pete. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pauline was predeceased by her husband John Sykes and her brother Joseph.
