SMITH, George William "Smitty"

84, Factorydale, Kings Co., passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2005, in the D.V.A. Unit of Soldier's Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., he was a son of the late Alfred and Clara Smith (Sault Ste. Marie). George served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years, retiring with the rank of C.P.O. 1st Class. During his career he served in the Second World War and in peacetime, he served on various Canadian War Ships, including a tour of duty through the northwest passage on H.M.C.S. Labrador. Upon his retirement from the R.C.N. he was employed by the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation until 1986. He was a volunteer and support worker for fellow veterans at the D.V.A. Unit in Middleton for 11 years. Smitty loved the great outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman and his experiences became the focus of the many paintings that he completed as an accomplished artist throughout his retirement. He was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Berwick, where he had been a member of the parish council. He was also a member of the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officers Association and was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch No. 69, Berwick. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Veno, Factorydale; sisters, Lillian (Mickey) Roles, Witchita, Kan.; Maggie Guest, London, Ont.; Dorothy Vena, Sault Ste. Marie; brother, Harold (Verlyn) Smith, Sault Ste. Marie; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Trepasso; brothers, Albert and Victor Smith. There will be no visitation. Royal Canadian Legion and funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, in Christ Anglican Church, Berwick, Rev. Charles Bull officiating, with burial in Berwick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, the D.V.A. Unit of Soldier's Memorial Hospital or Christ Anglican Church, Berwick, would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to H.C.
